We benefit from sound waves in many areas, from monitoring babies during pregnancy to examining internal organs. However, when it comes to skin rejuvenation, the way we use these sound waves changes. In Focused Ultrasound treatment, sound waves are used not only for imaging but also as a therapeutic force.<\/p>\n<p>To understand how this technology works, we can recall a simple experiment from childhood. When you hold a magnifying glass under the sun, the sunlight passes through the lens and focuses on a single point on a piece of paper. At that focal point, intense heat energy is generated, while the other areas the light passes through do not heat up. HIFU devices work with this same logic. When we place the device head on your skin, high-intensity sound waves pass through the uppermost layer of your skin (the epidermis) without causing any damage. These waves converge beneath the skin at a pre-determined depth (for example, 4.5 millimeters below the surface).<\/p>\n<p>At this convergence point, microscopic heat focal points are created, reaching approximately 60\u201370 degrees Celsius. We call these \u201cthermal coagulation points.\u201d So why is this heat important? Because the most effective way to trigger the body\u2019s healing mechanism is to send it a controlled, micro-level stimulus. These tiny heat injuries created deep within the skin are perceived by the body as \u201crepair is needed here.\u201d Our brain immediately sends reparative cells to that area. This process greatly increases the production of collagen and elastin fibers, which are the building blocks of the skin. In other words, we are not giving your skin a foreign substance from the outside; we are simply waking up your skin\u2019s own dormant repair factories with sound waves.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_Layers_of_the_Skin_Does_HIFU_Treatment_Affect\"><\/span>Which Layers of the Skin Does HIFU Treatment Affect?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The main feature that distinguishes this technology from laser or radiofrequency methods is the depth it can reach. Our skin is not made of a single layer; it has a layered structure, and aging manifests differently in each one. By using different heads (cartridges), Focused Ultrasound allows us to target three different levels of the skin in the same session. Understanding these strategic layers is important for grasping the logic of the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>First, with heads that reach a depth of 1.5 millimeters, we target the more superficial layer of the skin. This is the area where fine wrinkles form and where skin tone and texture are determined. Treatment at this level makes the skin look brighter, more vibrant, and smoother. Secondly, we go down to 3.0 millimeters, into the deep dermis layer. This is the collagen bed that gives the skin its fullness. The heat increase in this area helps the skin regain its elasticity and become firmer.<\/p>\n<p>However, the real star of HIFU is the 4.5-millimeter depth. At this depth lies a special membrane called the SMAS. The SMAS is a supportive tissue that surrounds the facial muscles and determines the framework and posture of the face. In facelift surgeries, plastic surgeons open the skin and tighten this layer surgically. With HIFU, we reach this layer with sound waves without performing surgery. Under the effect of heat, the SMAS layer contracts and shortens. This contraction creates an upward \u201clifting\u201d effect on the skin. So the term non-surgical facelift comes from this deep-level effect.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_Areas_Is_HIFU_Treatment_Suitable_For\"><\/span>Which Areas Is HIFU Treatment Suitable For?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Focused Ultrasound can be safely used in many areas that have loosened, sagged, and lost their contour due to gravity. The most common complaint our patients present with is the deterioration of the facial oval and the feeling that the face is \u201cdrooping\u201d downward. As we age, the contour over the jawbone softens and the face begins to appear squarer. With HIFU, we can sharpen this line again and achieve a younger \u201cV-shaped\u201d face.<\/p>\n<p>The double chin area is a separate issue altogether. In this area, both sagging and sometimes excess fat may be present together. The deep HIFU heads not only tighten the skin but may also help reduce stubborn fat cells in that area. As a result, the appearance of the double chin improves, while the angle between the neck and chin becomes more aesthetic. In patients with brow drooping, by treating the forehead and temple region, we can lift the brows by 1\u20132 millimeters and create a more open and refreshed look.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Is_an_Ideal_Candidate_for_Focused_Ultrasound_HIFU\"><\/span>Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As with every aesthetic procedure, selecting the right patient is the biggest key to success in HIFU treatment. Sometimes our patients come in with a photo or the name of a celebrity and say, \u201cI want to look like this.\u201d However, not every technology is suitable for every skin type. For us, the ideal patient profile consists of people with \u201cmild to moderate\u201d skin laxity.<\/p>\n<p>This group generally includes people aged 30 and over. If, when looking in the mirror, you feel that your cheeks have slightly dropped, your jawline is not as defined as before, or your brows have lowered, but you think it is still too early for surgical facelift surgery or you are afraid of an operation, then HIFU may be an excellent fit for you.<\/p>\n<p>However, in some cases, we need to guide our patients toward different methods or surgery. For example, in older patients with severely sagging skin and significant excess skin, HIFU alone may not provide sufficient lifting. In such cases, the most honest approach is not to give false hope and instead discuss surgical options. Likewise, caution is needed in people with very little facial fat and extremely thin, \u201cdry\u201d skin. On the other hand, in people with very full and fatty faces, it may become more difficult for the sound waves to reach the targeted supportive layer.
